Aviolinx receives funding from the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems - Vinnova!

2011-12-13. Vinnova awards Aviolinx over 2.4 Million Swedish Kronor to develop an innovative resource optimization system, designed to support modern airline processes for combined planning of aircraft and crew resources.

Today, aviation uses outdated methods of ‘compartmentalised’ resource optimization, where for example, aircraft resource planning may not properly consider crew resource needs, or visa versa. These methods are no longer cost effective in a modern airline business arena, and there is a real need to consider key resource factors in one holistic process.

The goal of Aviolinx’s project is to design and develop an entirely new, optimized resource planning system, by considering the utilisation of aircraft and crew resources as one process. This will mean that airlines with be able to utilize their resources more cost effectively.

Joakim Andersson, CEO Aviolinx stated: "By combining a number of processes together in the planning phase, means that the task of planning is faster and more flexible. For the airline, this means increased efficiency and profitability. This improved use of resources, in terms of aircraft and crew, will also have a positive impact on the environment, by reducing unnecessary flying, and improve the work situation for airline employees”. Our ideas for the ‘next generation’ resource planning system have received a very positive response in the marketplace. This tells me two things: that there is a real need for a new approach and that we are on the right track!"

About Vinnova
Vinnova, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems, invests in research and strengthens Sweden’s innovative capacity for competitiveness, sustainable development and growth. Their efforts range from programmes for R&D projects in small companies and at universities, to long-term development of strong research and innovation environments that attract R&D investment and expertise from around the world. Vinnova’s efforts are based on cooperation and co-financing with industry, academia and the public sector.

Aviolinx Ash Plotter

2011-05-24. More volcanic activity in Iceland.

The Icelandic volcano, Grimsvotn erupted on Saturday 21st May (the first time since 2004), sending a plume of ash 12 miles high into the sky. The volcano lies beneath the ice of the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland. It was the volcano's largest eruption in 100 years. The ash temporarily blocked out the sun, it invaded nearby villages and by Sunday it had even reached the capital Reykjavik in the far west, causing Iceland’s airways and their main airport to close. International flights were diverted as a no-fly zone covering a 120-mile radius around the volcano was put in place.

An eruption beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier on April 14, 2010, closed European airspace for six days, grounding 100,000 flights at a cost of $1.7 billion, the International Air Transport Association estimated. Scientists are also saying that we can expect a lot more volcanic activity from Iceland in the coming years.

Aviolinx has developed a web based solution that is specifically designed for monitoring ash clouds. You can quickly and easily see if your flight route is affected, and take appropriate action to minimise disruption to your flight. This will certainly assist pilots and operations departments and we consider the Ash Plotter as a ‘must have tool’ for all airlines pilots, and flight dispatchers.

For the past 5 or 6 years we have provided a home for a family of osprey who has adopted us and taken up residence at the top of one of our rotatable log-periodic Transmitter antennas. We hope that with their birds-eye view up there that they feel safe and secure, and also that they don’t get too dizzy when we adjust the antenna direction!

In the photo you can see the osprey’s nest located right at the top of our mast.

The Osprey is found in summer throughout Europe north into Scandinavia and Scotland, (though not Iceland), and it winters in North Africa. Although migrating predominantly in the day, they sometimes fly in the dark hours particularly in crossings over water and cover on average 260–280 km/day with a maximum of 431 km/day. The Osprey has a large range, covering 9,670,000 km2 in just Africa and the Americas, and has a large global population estimated at around 460,000. (Source: en.wikipedia.org).

Airpug trial at Jet2 is welcomed by pilot community

2010-09-09. Jet2.com has become the first airline to officially trial Aviolinx’s airline mobile solution. We are delighted that Jet2.com has agreed to trial the ‘Airpug’ for its pilot community. Jet2.com has now introduced and implemented the 3G mobile technology as part of their information systems and the increased efficiency in access to crew rosters, flight information and other business critical data speaks for itself . Initially the trial has been conducted by the flight crew community but due to the positive feedback and a 100% track record in regard to system integrity, an additional group of cabin crew will also shortly be given access.

Jet2.comHeading the project for Jet2.com Graeme Atkinson (Crew Control Manager) said, "We are very pleased to be testing this type of technology. Mobile phones have come so far in the last couple of years and have to some extent caught-up and surpassed laptop technology. If as expected, we can utilise this technology for improving pre-flight briefing, on-time performance, data capturing, turn-a-round monitoring etc we will see this as a success".

Aviolinx’s Richard Corlett (Product Director) said, "We are very pleased with the way the trial is going at Jet2.com. The feedback so far has been most promising and we are now eager to start showcasing the many other functions to other areas within the business".

Aircraft Turnaround Monitoring System (ATMS)

2010-04-09. At Aviolinx we fully understand that one of the greatest aspirations for airlines and other airport-based companies is to improve the efficiency and flexibility of ground handling in order to lower operating costs and reduce flight delays.

It is a disturbing fact that ground delays result in unnecessary costs of millions of euros per year, are often caused by factors within the airline´s control.

At Aviolinx we totally understand the complexities of aircraft turnaround and the spiralling costs involved due to delays, of which the average cost per minute of delay is between 50 & 100 Euros!

Aviolinx have now developed the ‘Aircraft Turnaround Monitoring System’ (ATMS) designed to greatly improve operational punctuality (which of course equates to lower costs) but also to improve customer service.

ATMS captures a time stamp of each and every event undertaken on a turnaround and then displays the "snapshots" in a clear and concise real-time view. Not only does ATMS get to the root cause of the delay it also provides a warning of a potential delay ‘before’ it happens, allowing the airline or handling agent to take appropriate action. Operational managers can reap the rewards of the analysis of this data to ensure that marked improvements are made.

ATMS enables both the airline and ground handlers to dramatically improve their utilisation of resources and thus deliver much improved overall results.

All real-time information for each flight can be made available to supervising personnel in operations control so as to give an overall real-time graphical operational picture which allows for proactive and efficient management of the entire operation.

If you wish to take advantage of the opportunity to find out more about how to save costs and improve on-time performance, please contact us at info@aviolinx.com

Hotel Bookings become easier to manage with our new module

2010-03-15. Aviolinx have just launched their latest web based solution. This hotel management system has been developed to simplify the hotel booking process.

An AvioLinx spokesperson said, “Giving an airline the ability to push new bookings, cancellations, name changes etc, directly to the hotel via the web and allowing the hotel to confirm directly is a sure way to save money through miscommunication accurate communication”.

The system works in conjunction with the Airline’s host crew system. When a booking(s) etc is required the process is efficiently managed by the system with very little interaction required.

The user simply sets a time span and / or stations they want to filter on. The intuitive screen then shows the hotel requirements for each day. One segment of the booking highlights the requirements for that day, the corresponding part of the booking will be colour coded indicating how many have actually been sent, confirmed or denied.

By clicking on one day, the user gets access to an array of data, crew member details, check in and out times, transport information and the planned cost for each stay.

The screen also has the ability to display the total planned cost for each day by station / hotel.

Semi automatic functions
From this screen (by multiple select or individually select) the user is able to push a preformatted email to the hotel(s). In that email there will be a URL, which takes the hotel operator directly to a web screen where they can confirm or deny the bookings.
